I noticed a few questions on our forum asking how to record a screencast video on iPhone, so I decided to create a tutorial showing the whole process. This should work with iPhone xs, xr and other iPhones with iOS 12.
Screen record your iPhone is very easy since Apple included a Screen Recording app, especially for this purpose. The problem is, that Screen Recording is not very visible and for that reason, many people struggle to find it and use it. So let’s start by finding the app first.
Screencast recording on iPhone in 3 easy steps
#1 As mentioned, we need to make this Screen Recorder app more accessible first and I think it is a good idea to add it to the Control Centre. Control Centre is the area of frequently used apps, you can see it if you swipe you fringer from the bottom of the screen towards the middle of the screen.
To add Screen Recording to the Control Centre, go to Settings/Control Centre and tap Customise Controls:
#2 So now the Screen Recorder should be in the Control Centre. Swipe your finger from the bottom of the screen towards the top to activate Control Centre. On my iPhone, I can see the recording app here:
You can start recording your screencast immediately. Just tap the icon, you should see counting down from 3 to 0 and the recording will start. To finish it off, go back to the Control Centre and tap it again. Your screencast will be automatically stored in your Photos app.
#3 The default option will record the video without audio but if you want to add some commentary or want to record some sounds from your app, you can change settings and switch the microphone when recording. Just go back to Control Centre, and use so-called 3d touch on the Screen Recording icon. In other words, tap it and press slightly harder. A new menu should be visible allowing you to control the Microphone. Just tap the mike once to activate it and tap again to switch it off. Once you are happy with your choice, tap ‘Start Recording’. Here’s a screenshot with the Microphone On:
