Adobe Audition turned grey or purple? Here’s what to do…

A few weeks ago, I was editing some sound in Adobe Audition, quickly copying, pasting, cropping and so on when, BUM, out of the blue, the sound wave turned purple. This is how the sound wave looked like:

Adobe Audition turned purple

It might depend on the colour temperature of your PC or monitor settings, some of you might see grey rather than purple. I use Adobe Audition CS5.5 by the way, this happened in the single Audio file view.

To cut long story short, after it changed the colour, I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t edit the file any more, some controllers in the menu were not active, the software didn’t even play the sound. Pressing Ctr-z to undo the change didn’t do anything either, the waveform stayed grey.

Since I have just started working on a new project and couldn’t do overcome this problem, I just started new project and started again from scratch.

But yesterday it happened again 🙁

But this time I have managed to remember the keyboard combination I used. I think I wanted to paste something using Ctr+v but instead I pressed Ctr+b. After I pressed Ctr-b again, the sound wave went back into the original, green colour and I could continue:

Soundwave in original, green colour

So basically, if this happened to you, all you have to do to reverse the change is to press Ctr+b again 🙂

I tried to find some information online about this behaviour but haven’t seen any good explanation. I searched for keyboard combination Ctr+b but I couldn’t find this shortcut in any Adobe Audition documentation. But it seems like some kind of option to me rather than software glitch.

If you know anything about it, please let me know in the comments below.
